Figures are approximate 2026 ranges and exclude living costs. UK academies (BA Speedbird) are priced in GBP. Cadet programs (Lufthansa, KLM) typically include a type rating; self-funded LCC routes (Ryanair, easyJet) usually do not.

Integrated vs Modular Cost

The two main EASA pathways cost very differently — here's how to weigh price against speed and flexibility.

Integrated ATPL

€80,000 – €130,000

18–24 months, full-time at one ATO

One continuous course from zero to frozen ATPL. Most expensive upfront, but the fastest route, with a structured syllabus, the MCC often included, and airline cadet connections. Best for funded young starters.

  • Fastest route to a frozen ATPL
  • Structured, airline-aligned syllabus
  • Highest upfront cost, full-time commitment

Modular ATPL

€60,000 – €90,000

2–4 years, build licences step by step

Complete each licence separately at your own pace, potentially at different schools. Usually the cheapest total cost because you can spread payments and work between modules. Best for career changers and budget-conscious students.

  • Cheapest overall — spread the cost
  • Work between modules to self-fund
  • Takes longer, no cadet programs

Frozen ATPL Cost Breakdown

What each EASA licence and rating costs on the way to a frozen ATPL — before adding a type rating.

EASA licence and rating cost breakdown for a frozen ATPL
Licence / RatingApprox. Cost
PPL(A) – Private Pilot License€10,000 – €15,000
ATPL Theory (14 exams)€8,000 – €15,000
CPL(A) – Commercial Pilot License€25,000 – €40,000
IR(A) – Instrument Rating€12,000 – €18,000
ME – Multi-Engine Rating€4,000 – €7,000
MCC – Multi-Crew Cooperation€3,000 – €5,000
Total Frozen ATPL€62,000 – €100,000
Excluding type rating

What "frozen ATPL" means for the price

A frozen ATPL means you've passed all 14 ATPL theory exams and hold a CPL with IR, but don't yet have the 1,500 hours needed for a full ATPL. You can fly for an airline as a First Officer with just 200 hours — so the €62,000 – €100,000 above gets you airline-eligible, unlike the US where you must build 1,500 hours first.

What's Included — and the Hidden Costs

Quoted course prices rarely tell the whole story. Budget for these extras before you commit.

EASA Class 1 Medical

€500 – €1,000

Required before training — and renewed every 12 months (6 months if over 40). Get it first to confirm you qualify.

Type Rating (A320 / B737)

€25,000 – €40,000

Often NOT included. Many European airlines expect you to arrive with a type rating or accept a bond deducted from salary.

Living & Accommodation

€10,000 – €25,000

12–24 months of rent, food and transport while training full-time — far cheaper in Spain, Portugal, Greece or Cyprus.

Exam fees, books & equipment

€1,500 – €4,000

Exam re-sits, headset, charts, kneeboard and uniform add up. Budget a buffer for re-tests.

What's the Cheapest Pilot Training in Europe?

Three proven ways to cut the cost of becoming an EASA airline pilot.

1. Choose the modular route (€60,000 – €90,000)

Modular training is the cheapest route because you spread costs over 2–4 years and can work between modules. You also get to pick the best-value school for each licence rather than paying one premium integrated fee.

2. Train in a lower-cost, good-weather country

Greece and Cyprus (€60,000 – €85,000), Portugal (€65,000 – €95,000) and parts of Spain (€70,000 – €100,000) offer integrated EASA training well below northern-Europe prices, with 300+ flyable days a year and cheaper living costs.

3. Apply to a cadet program with financing

Cadet programs (Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM/Air France) cost more upfront but can include the type rating, airline-backed financing and a conditional job offer — reducing your real out-of-pocket cost and risk.

Financing Your Pilot Training

Few students can pay €100,000+ upfront. Here are the most common ways to fund it.

Bank & aviation loans

Standard bank loans or specialist aviation lenders spread the cost over years. Calculate the return on investment against expected First Officer salary before borrowing.

Airline cadet financing

Lufthansa, BA and KLM/Air France cadet programs may offer airline-backed loans, sponsored portions or deferred repayment — sometimes with salary in the final training phase.

Type rating bonds

Budget carriers like Ryanair and Wizz Air pay your type rating upfront and deduct €20,000 – €40,000 from your salary over 2–3 years. Read the terms — you owe the balance if you leave early.

Spread modular payments

Modular training lets you pay licence by licence and work between modules, avoiding a single large loan and keeping your total cost lower.
